Speeding is deadly driving. Traveling at excessive speeds or engaging in aggressive maneuvers drastically increases the force and severity of traffic crashes. In 2024, speeding or aggressive driving was a factor in 33% of fatal crashes in North Dakota. Of the 42 drivers involved in these fatal crashes, 57% were between the ages of 18 and 44, and 76% were male.
These statistics highlight a critical need for safer choices on our roadways. Speeding isn’t just about breaking the law. It includes driving too fast for road, weather or traffic conditions, even when you are traveling at or below the posted speed limit. North Dakota winters and heavy rain require drivers to slow down to maintain control.
Hazardous driving behaviors often overlap and endanger everyone on the road. These include:
- Driving above the posted speed limit.
- Driving too fast for current road conditions (ice, snow, or gravel).
- Following too closely (tailgating).
- Making unsafe or aggressive passes.
- Driving in a reckless, careless or erratic manner.
North Dakota law states that speeding or aggressive driving that interferes with safe operation can result in citations, fines or points on a driver’s record. Note the following key updates:
- Interstate Limits: The maximum speed limit on many North Dakota interstates is 80 mph. These limits are for ideal conditions only.
- Work Zones: Minimum fines for speeding in a construction zone (when workers are present) have increased to $150.
- Basic Rule: You may be cited for speeding even if you are under the limit if your speed is "greater than is reasonable and prudent" for the conditions.
Higher speeds compromise safety by:
- Reducing Reaction Time: Limiting a driver’s ability to react to sudden hazards or obstacles.
- Increasing Stopping Distance: Faster travel requires significantly more distance to come to a complete stop.
- Misjudged Distance: Making it harder for other motorists and pedestrians to judge your speed and distance accurately.
Safety is a shared responsibility. You can help reach the goal of Vision Zero by following these protocols:
- Obey speed limits and slow down for road and weather conditions.
- Leave enough space (a safety "cushion") between you and other vehicles.
- Avoid aggressive behaviors like tailgating or unsafe passing.
- Plan ahead so you don’t feel rushed or pressured to speed.
Speeding isn’t worth the risk. Stop speeding before it stops you.
