Everyone deserves to get where they’re going safely. People travel in different ways, by car, bike or on foot. Everyone shares responsibility for safety on North Dakota roads.
Bicyclists and pedestrians are more vulnerable in a crash because they don’t have the protection of a vehicle, seat belts or airbags. Staying alert and following the rules of the road helps prevent serious injuries and deaths.
Drivers may not always see people walking or biking, especially:
- At intersections and driveways.
- At night or in low-visibility conditions.
- Near large vehicles with blind spots.
Higher vehicle speeds, and distractions increase the risk of serious injury when crashes occur.
Staying Safe with Pedestrians
- Pedestrians must obey pedestrian-control signals at crosswalks.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing.
- Avoid distractions like phones or headphones.
- Use sidewalks and crosswalks when available.
- Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
- Never assume a driver sees you.
- Ride in the same direction as vehicle traffic.
- Ride as far to the right as is safe and practical.
- Not carry more people than the bike is designed for.
- Use a white front light and a red rear reflector or light at night.
- Wear a helmet.
- Stay alert and watch for turning vehicles.
- Avoid blind spots around large vehicles.
- Make sure your bike has working brakes and lights.
Drivers play a critical role in protecting vulnerable road users:
- Drivers must yield the right of way to pedestrians in a crosswalk.
- Slow down and obey posted speed limits.
- Look carefully for pedestrians and bicyclists at intersections and driveways.
- Give bicyclists enough space when passing.
- Check surroundings when turning or backing up.
Safety is a shared responsibility. Staying alert and looking out for one another helps prevent crashes and saves lives, no matter how you travel.
