Legacy High School was recognized as North Dakota’s newest Vision Zero School Monday during halftime of the school’s Powder Puff game, bringing the distraction-free driving message to a crowd of students, families and community members.
As a Vision Zero School, Legacy students will lead efforts to encourage their peers to keep their attention on the road and make driving distraction-free the expectation among students. The program will remind drivers to put their phones away and avoid other activities that take their eyes, hands or attention away from driving.
“We wanted to bring Vision Zero to Legacy because distracted driving is something students see and deal with every day,” said Addy Hildremyr, [junior] at Legacy High School. “We hope this program reminds students that putting their phones away and paying attention can help keep their friends, classmates and everyone else on the road safe.”
“Distracted driving is preventable, and young drivers can help lead that change,” said Deputy Taylor Wray, of the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department. “By speaking up, putting distractions away and staying focused every time they drive, Legacy students can help protect everyone who shares the road.”
Legacy joins a growing list of Vision Zero Schools dedicated to eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries in North Dakota. Schools interested in participating in the program can contact the NDDOT Highway Safety Division, chrisrkeller@nd.gov.
