Back-to-School Means More Young Riders on North Dakota Roads

As students head back to school, Vision Zero is reminding North Dakotans that the start of the school year brings more young people traveling to and from school by bicycle, electric bicycle (e-bike), off-highway vehicle (OHV) and on foot. Whether driving, riding or walking, everyone has a role in preventing crashes and keeping students safe. 

As transportation options continue to evolve, drivers should expect to encounter a variety of road users during the morning and afternoon commute, particularly in neighborhoods, school zones and rural communities. 

“Every trip to school should end with every student arriving home safely,” said Karin Mongeon, director of the North Dakota Department of Transportation Highway Safety Division. “We all share the responsibility of preventing crashes and moving North Dakota closer to zero traffic deaths.” 

Parents also play an important role in helping their children understand the rules of the road before the school year begins. Whether a child walks, rides a bike, uses an e-bike or operates an OHV where permitted, practicing safe driving habits before the first day of school can help build confidence and reduce the risk of crashes.  

Back-to-School Safety Reminders 

For drivers: 

• Slow down in school zones, neighborhoods and other areas where children are present. 

• Watch for bicycles, e-bikes, OHVs and pedestrians. 

• Give riders plenty of room when passing. 

• Stay alert and eliminate distractions behind the wheel. 

For parents: 

• Talk with children about traffic safety before the first day of school. 

• Make sure helmets fit properly and are worn every ride. 

• Choose age and skill-appropriate bicycles, e-bikes and OHVs. 

• Practice routes together and establish safe places to ride. 

For student riders: 

• Wear a properly fitted helmet on every ride. 

• Obey traffic signs and signals. 

• Stay visible and watch for traffic. 

• Put phones away and avoid other distractions while riding.
